Custom metal PCB enclosure

Precision Metal Enclosure Manufacturing Guide

Precision metal enclosure manufacturing depends on a controlled chain from design release to final inspection. Accurate individual parts are important, but the finished cabinet must also assemble correctly, support hardware, maintain door alignment and meet the approved cosmetic and functional requirements.

Define Critical Features Before Quotation

Drawings should identify functional datums, mating features, cutouts, mounting patterns and critical tolerances. Material grade, thickness, finish and quantity affect the process plan. Noncritical dimensions should use practical general tolerances so inspection effort is focused where it matters.

Cutting and Hole Preparation

Laser cutting and punching create profiles, openings and patterns. Edge condition, minimum feature size and heat effects should suit the material and finish. Threads, countersinks and hardware holes need clear callouts, while openings for displays, connectors or glands should be checked against the actual components.

Bending and Dimensional Control

Bend radius, direction, tooling and sequence influence final geometry. Bend deductions vary with material and process. First-off parts should be checked before batch production, especially when several bends locate doors, mounting plates or mating panels.

Welding and Assembly

Joint design and weld sequence affect strength, distortion and appearance. Fixtures can improve repeatability, but the finished body still needs checks for squareness, door fit and mounting interfaces. Grinding and cosmetic finishing should not remove required material or conceal unacceptable joints.

Surface Finish and Masked Areas

Powder coating, painting, brushing and other finishes require preparation and acceptance criteria. Specify color, texture, cosmetic zones, masked threads and conductive bonding areas. Coating thickness should be considered at hinges, locks and close-fitting assemblies.

Inspection Plan

  • Material and drawing revision verification
  • First-off and critical dimension checks
  • Door, lock and removable-panel operation
  • Weld, edge and surface inspection
  • Finish, labeling and packaging review

The inspection plan should state the sampling method, measurement equipment and reporting format where records are required. Cosmetic acceptance zones and packaging checks should be agreed before production rather than judged only after delivery.
