Electrical cabinet protection design must respond to the real installation environment and the complete enclosure configuration. Material choice alone does not establish protection. Doors, seams, gaskets, cable entries, vents, windows and installed hardware work together as one system.
Define the Environmental Exposure
List expected dust, water, condensation, salt, industrial contaminants, cleaning methods, temperature and sunlight. Indoor, sheltered outdoor and exposed outdoor installations require different details. The specification should distinguish normal service from temporary transport or cleaning exposure.
Control Doors, Joints and Gaskets
Door stiffness, hinge alignment and lock position affect gasket compression. Continuous sealing surfaces need suitable flatness and corner treatment. Gasket material should be selected for temperature, chemicals and expected service life. A larger door or new hardware can change the behavior of a previously reviewed design.
Design Cable Entries and Openings as Part of the System
Glands, connectors, vents, fans, displays and windows create interfaces that may be more vulnerable than the metal body. Define their location, size and sealing method in the drawing. Field-made openings can invalidate assumptions unless an approved installation method is followed.
Consider Corrosion, Impact and Access
Material and finish should match the environment, while fasteners and dissimilar-metal interfaces need compatibility review. Where impact or unauthorized access matters, specify the applicable requirement and acceptance method. Locks and interlocks should be based on the finished electrical system and user-access policy.
Ratings Require a Defined Configuration
IP, NEMA or other enclosure ratings apply to specific configurations and verification methods. They should not be copied from a material description or visually similar enclosure. State the target standard, required test or documentation, and all accessories included in the evaluated build.
